Many of members of the Acorn Explorer Unit are also Young Leaders with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Doing this counts towards the volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh's Award and is a great way to help out with the group.
The Young Leaders scheme is NOT COMPULSORY, you do not have to be a Young Leader if you wish to be an Explorer Scout. At the same time you can be a young leader without being a member of our Explorer scout unit, however we do recomend that Young Leaders are a member of an Explorer Unit somewhere!
There is a seperate Young Leaders training scheme which is run both by the group and also by the district and county. More information about this can be found at www.scouts.org.uk/explorers/resources/YoungLeaders.htm. We aim for our Young Leaders to complete the full 11 modules and 4 missions whilst they are working with us.
What's next?
Our current contingent of five Young Leaders have completed Module A (Prepare for Take Off), Module G (Programme Plans), Module K (First Aid Master Class) and Module F (Special People).
For a full breakdown of the modules visit http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/6to25/explorer/youngleader/factsheets.htm
Want to get involved?
If you'd like to be a young leader please e-mail Chris Hunt, our Explorer Scout Leader. If you don't live around Clerkenwell, Finsbury or Islington you're still more than welcome but there may be a group nearer. Visit www.scouts.org.uk/join to be put in touch with your local groups.
Thank You!
Firstly, the biggest thank you has to go out to our Young Leaders who get in there and help us run our meetings.
We are also very grateful to the London School of Economics and Political Science's Rosebery Hall who gave us free use of a conference room to run our Module A and Module G training sessions in October 2009 and have let us have the space for Module K in January 2010! More details about LSE's conference facilties at Rosebery Hall can be found at www.lsevenues.co.uk/rosebery.
